Children at Work

Factory owners in the late 1800’s  wanted to save money. They hired youngsters because they could pay them less than adults.

Children did not have equal social rights.  Children had to work at the ages 10-16. They worked in factories or on the street from a young age to support their family. Thus, they couldn’t go to school.

A picture titled “Small Newsie” from 1910 shows a little boy selling newspapers when he should be in school. This picture  shows that children did not have fair social rights. They started working when they were young and did not receive a proper education.

The Children Rights Movement is about children having to work and not being able to attend school. The current issue is about teens who attend school but still do not receive a proper education. These situations are similar because in both cases, children are not receiving a proper education.
