Finding the Solution to the Pollution
by Rachel from There's Pollution! Find A Solution!, 219x in Bronx, on April, 24th 2007
The Bronx has been one of the most populated boroughs in New York City for over 40 years. Although the Bronx has been one of the most popular places in New York, it has also been the most environmentally unstable. During the 1980's the Bronx was ruled by drugs and violence. Even though the Bronx has improved it's environmental living conditions since the 1980's, the Bronx is still polluted by trucks and factories that release dangerous fumes. These fumes cause asthma, cancer, and other diseases.
Prevention is better than cure The trucks that bring products to the factories are killing many children and also adults in the Bronx. Why wouldn't You want to stop these industrial trucks and some vehicles from pollutiing and killing the environment of people living in the Bronx? This campaign will show and describe how industrialization in the Bronx is affecting its citizens. We would also like to encourage citizens in the Bronx to change their way of living. This campaign is important to us because, as children who are also citizens of the Bronx, we believe that we have the right to speak against anything our borough that is affecting us. We also believe that when we speak out, we will be able to change the minds of other citizens in the Bronx and prompt them to take the action of creating a healthier living condition for their community.
Injustices Never Seem To End Economic injustice is when people are deprived the right to own property and earn a living. In 1886, many immigrant children faced economic injustice through the New York State Factory Act. Many mmigrants came to New York expecting to work in factories. Unfortunately, only their children were hired to do dangerous jobs like sifting coal in dark mines. There were only seven states where children over 12yrs could choose to go to school or work. New York children were excluded from this opportunity. This picture shows applicants for working papers at the Department of Education building, Boston, Massachusetts. In this picture you can see that there are more children who were applying for jobs than adults. This injustice didn’t help the children move forward in their movement. This was b The past civil rights movement for Child Labor Rights during 1886 connects very much to the current civil rights issue about environmental pollution in the Bronx. During 1886 in New York, many immigrant children were faced with hazardous fumes coming from many of the factories that the worked in and the trucks that brought the products to the factories. The fumes caused asthma and pnuemonia to many of these immigrant children. Bronx today also faces dangerous fumes that are caused by the trucks that bring products to factories and smoke from factories. These pollutants are also causing diseases such as cancer and asthma in the Bronx community. Immigrants are the victims in both of these civil rights issue. That's because immigrant are treated according their legal status which is a very cruel social injustice.
