The Educational Rights of Students

Today, thousands of children are very fortunate enough to be educated. They are able to study and learn about various topics regarding things about the world, scientific knowledge and more. It is a requirement in the United States that all minors under the age of 16 attend school. Just like these children, we feel very lucky for having new laws that give all children equal access to schools. Even though children’s civil rights are better protected today, we believe that inequality still exists among schools across the nation.

We belong to a public school in New York City and we have been to other public schools across the United States. In other states, we discovered that there are different classes which are available to students. We think that this is unfair to some of the students who attend underprivileged schools. Many schools in the New York City do not have the same resources and funding that schools have in other states. For instance, in other schools, walls are chipped, the blackboards are dirty with words carved into it, doors do not close right, and teachers give up on certain students. Across the United States there are many children who attend schools that have financial problems. Students do not have the same opportunities as schools that are better funded. Some classes are unavailable to some students such as Computers, Band, and other extra curriculum activities because many schools do not have the funds to offer these classes.

In the 1800's to the 1900's, children were not put into school but were put to work.  Back then, many children were not as fortunate as the children these days. Those children were not given equal rights to be able to go to school and be educated. Abundant numbers of children were not taught how to read, write and/or how to solve even the basic math. For this reason, children and other reformers and activists fought for the civil rights of children. Just as many children of the 19th century were denied schooling, many kids today still have not been successful in getting the education they need. Therefore, for this reason, we recognize that the government should take action by enforcing Universal National Student Rights and National Testing in order to solve the various challenges and trials that the educational world has given the children of this generation.
