Asian American Movement
How do you think that the Asians were treated when they immigrated to the U.S? Well believe it or not they were treated very harsh and in a very unimaginable way. They were being discriminated against because they were treated with certain unfair and unequal injustices. The Chinese immigrants were treated with economic injustices because they weren’t getting paid well enough for the work that they did. Also because they were charged and forced to pay police taxes between $2.50 and $4.00 to be able to use gold mines and own businesses in
California. They were also treated with social and political injustices. There was a lot of racism going on as well because the white people didn’t have to pay the taxes that the Chinese immigrants had to pay.
As time went by from the 1850s to the 1942 many things happen that involved Asians in other words Chinese immigrants and the way that they were being mistreated. For example in 1872 a white man murdered a Chinese mine worker. The murderer was arrested and put on trial. There were three other Chinese immigrants that testified at Mr. Halls trail. The judge’s from the
California state court said that he was wrongly convicted because the words of a Chinese man can not be used to convict a white man. After this happen the violence against Chinese immigrants increased because the white people knew they couldn’t be convicted if there wasn’t a witnesses other than Chinese immigrant to talk in the court. The violence against Chinese immigrants continued and in fact a white man robbed or burned almost every house in the Chinese neighborhoods of
Los Angeles. Many Chinese were beaten and fifteen were killed. However no one got arrested for the crime that was committed. The violence continued in
California and through out the west coast and in 1872 court case was cancelled and now Chinese immigrants could be a witness in court.
Do you think that the mistreatment the Chinese immigrants were going through didn’t have an end and something achieved? Well I will tell you that the mistreatment against the Chinese immigrants did have an end and also an achievement. The achievement that the Chinese immigrants had was the immigration act of 1965. This act allowed anyone to immigrate to the U.S with no problem. An example of this was Enrique Carneado a Cuban refugee who has already immigrated to the U.S and reunited with his wife, Dulce and daughter, Margarita after the immigration act of 1965. This was the achievement that the Chinese immigrants had after they were so badly mistreated.
