What if you were a child in the 1870’s and you had to work hours of the day? What if one day you were followed from school by some rich factor owners you persuaded your parents to send you to work? Well these amazing children went through this. It took almost 70 years to gain their civil rights during that time blacks were still fighting for they’re on rights. But fortunately god had a plan and now we all have rights has human being and as American citizens, America progresses.
The horrible atrocities held by making children almost like slaves, were that children lost limbs, finger’s, hands and died from being decapitated and blood loss from working those dangerous machines. The factor owners and executive staff would follow children home, to persuade children’s parents to send there child to work in they’re factor (knowing they’re families needed the money). Also due to poor pay, sickening working conditions and had working environment led to these children getting all sorts of diseases such as bronchitis, asthma. A girl working in a factory actually lost her hair and scalp working her usual on dangerous machines. She had to stay in the hospital for 7 months with no disability check. The newsies also were children, and to sell papers to make money they had to buy it from newspaper companies. When the company owners decided to raise the price for the newsies to buy the papers. That’s when the newsies went on strike. But what they didn’t anticipate on was that the companies would replace them with new newsies. So lead by kid blink, which was young black boy, the newsies burn all the due newspapers. Finally the newspaper companies gave in and lowered the price. This happened in 1899, the newsies got they’re jobs back and also learned the power in numbers to fight injustice that come upon them. This was the catalyst to this inspiring movement.
These child were oppressed, and even though being forced to work the didn’t give in and the fought back. These children didn’t stop until they got humanly rights just as human being alone, but also as citizens of the now richest and most successful country in the world. Some of these children along the line decided to stand up and fight for the rights for better and equal pay, for the right to go to schools, and also to learn more and become successful in there life time. Great leaders such as kid blink, who helped lead children and their family the newsies strike. The methods of resistance challenged the factor owner’s stability and willingness. There were methods of resistances in all sorts of ways, such as photography and journalism. A man named Jacob riis was hired to take pictures and interview the laboring children and they’re families (mostly immigrant families) and how the children were disabled and the horrific working conditions they worked in and how they’re families lived. He did this to persuade the government to help change these conditions. Also lets not forget mothers Jones and how much she’s helped in all this. Mother Jones led a march of laboring children from New York to Philadelphia to speak to the president of the United States president. But even though when the president did not wish to see them, it still counted as san accomplish something such as bringing press to this situation.
The main Accomplishment in this is that child labor over all did end. As a war, lives were lost, money spent, and some still under effect. During the great depression, American president Woodrow Wilson held a conference to discuss the matter over why lots of this child was dieing from these diseases. What was found was that theses child were laborers who worked in unsanitary places and non-ventilated places. This is when an amendment was past by congress ending child labor. It made so that children under the given age of sixteen had to go to school, and could not work; also to work dangerous or risky jobs you had to be 18 years of age or older.
My finishing statement is.” I will never forget those who paved the road on which I walk, for their journey was treacherous, their courage great, their vision keen, their devotion sacred, their lessons priceless, and my gratitude endless”. The is a quote from the blue Nile rights of passage inc., this means that although we may not show we care every day, we still remember, still appreciate as well as honor and respect those before us who put us where we are.
