Do you think that you would have been able to live through the time period of the civil rights movement? In my essay I will discuss the problems that people had to go though. I will also discuss the forms of protest that the people did. Another thing that I will discuss are the outcomes and the achievements.
In the year of 1886 seven and eight year olds were working in factories and sniffing coalmines. It was a very dangerous job for little kids to be working in factories. A photojournalist Jacob Riis took pictures of this. The New York State passed the factories act to stop children under the age of 13 from working in factories. But that still didn’t work. There were only two inspectors for every state. So factory owners will hide kids. They also helped parents forge signatures on children working papers.
In 1899 Newsies had to work harder to get money. Newspaper companies raised the prices from 50 cent to 60 cent for 100 copies. Kid Blake led them when they went on strike. They burned papers so that the new Newsies wouldn’t sell them. The newspaper companies realize that they were losing too much money so they lowered the prices.
Another thing that happened was that 12-year-old Camellia Teoli got injured working in the factory. Her hair had gotten caught in one of the machine because they sped the machines faster and it pulled her hair out of her scout. After that they sped the machines faster and decreased their salary. Then 23,000 people went on strike. After that Lawrence Mill offers their workers higher pay and shorter weeks.
I think I would have been able to live during that time because I am strong, intelligent young man. I say this because I understand that the children had to work hard to get the little amount of money that they got. But I know that if it is something that special for my family to get money I will work the hardest that I can.
