We Have a Dream

Many African Americans were treated unfairly in
America. In the early days of American history, African Americans were whipped if they disobeyed their slave owner. Many slaves worked on plantains (mainly picking cotton) and worked for a white family, but they didn’t get paid. Also if African Americans ran away, they were tracked by bounty hunters and brought back to the plantation where they worked.

Many African Americans did escape to the northern parts of
America, where slavery was abolished. The civil war helped give many African Americans their freedom, but some of the Native Americans didn’t want to give up their slaves.
America purchased the Native American slaves to give them their freedom. Many people were scared away from living in a certain area by the Ku Klux Klan.

The Ku Klux Klan wore white sheets over their heads and white cloaks to hide their identity. They used their outfits to scare African Americans into thinking that they were ghosts of confederate soldiers. The Klan burned African American’s crosses to show them that the Klan didn’t want them there. People, who resisted the warning of the clan, were killed in front of their families.

Many people fought against the clan and other racist people. Important people like Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubbman and Malcolm X fought for the freedom of African Americans. Many people Boycotted Grocery stores and Bus companies. Martin Luther King Jr. gave his “I have a dream” speech during the march on
Washington, standing in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

Many people risked their lives giving African Americans freedom and equal rights. I think to myself “why do people have to be racist” and “why would someone do that to another human being”. Many people suffered and when my teacher showed me pictures of what the K.K.K. I almost cried. In some pictures, you couldn’t even tell who the person was, and it really upset me. I am glad that people will not be discriminated against.
