Women’s rights movement began in the 1800’s. Some women associated with suffragettes were, Susan B. Anthony, Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Lucretia Mott, Lucy Stone, Julia Ward Howe, and so many more. It was hard being a woman in the 1800’s and they went through a lot. Here’s the story.
Why was the movement created? It was because women were treated unfairly. Men thought they were the dominate race so they stopped women from doing a lot of things such as being able to vote, or do anything in politics. Women were cheated out of there rights. There were also a lot of injustices with women. They were not able to attend schools and when working, they were paid less money then the men. They had no liberty and went on strike proposing the suffrage movement. Every woman that was associated in the movement was considered suffragettes. Over 300 suffragettes in a group in 1848 met in
Seneca Falls, New York and they wrote a document called the Declaration of Sentiments. It was decided that it would be based on the Declaration of Independence since Amendment 15 gave only African American men the rights to vote. Women wrote on the declaration that “all men and women are created equal, and should be treated equally in the
U.S.” This was an important beginning for women’s struggle for civil rights.
Women were staying strong and did not give up. A lot of women were thrown in jail when they began protesting and marching down the streets demanding there rights. In 1892, Susan B. Anthony became the president of the National American women’s suffrage association. Things began heading there way. By 1910 women were allowed there rights to vote in Wyoming, Utah, Idaho, Colorado, and
Washington. Women started having there rights during the beginning of the 1920’s. Things were heading there way and it was time to let women finally be women. By the end of the 1920’s women’s methods were successful.
Many achievements were made and things were handed back to women. The law stated that women could vote again and women could have there own freedom. Women also had there political rights given to them. Women could change the laws, go to school even when they were married, could have there rights to have any job, and they made the same money as men did working for the same hours. Everyone was equal.
This movement was so important because it got Women to be what they are today and if this never happened, I wonder what the world would be like without women not having any freedom or any power. Could most of them have killed themselves? I’m just glad that women are where there at today and I feel like what the country did to women was wrong and women didn’t deserve it. This was the struggle for women’s rights.
