| ...And Marriage for All:
Equal Marriage Rights in New York City
| There are many states that still haven't made same-sex marriages legal, and New York is one of them. But the question is, why should same-sex marriages be legal?
The Constitution states that "all men are created equal," and by denying gay and lesbian couples their rights, they are going against the Constitution. When somebody judges another person based on their sexual preference, it's almost like saying you don't like someone because they like skim milk and not whole milk. It just makes no sense! Many people throughout time fought for certain rights that they were denied. Women had to fight for their right to vote, inter-racial couples had to fight for their right to get married, and denying same-sex couples the right to marry is an infraction of their rights as Americans living in a Democracy. Right now, heterosexual couples are allowed to get married, whether they're an interracial couple or not. However, many years ago, because of anti-miscegenation laws, interracial couples were not allowed to get married. Marriage between same-sex couples is a governmental right that shouldn't be granted to heterosexual couples only. Since the anti-miscegenation laws are no longer valid, heterosexual couples can marry no matter they're race. I can't say the same for same-sex couples. Gay and lesbian couples are also being denied political, social, and economic rights. For example, if a gay man or lesbian woman is attacked because of their sexual orientation, and they go to court, they will most likely be denied their right to a fair trial. They're also denied the right from torture or cruel, inhumane or degrading treatment. Many of their rights are taken away. For more information about their denied rights go to: http://www.hrea.org/learn/guides/lgbt.html The purpose of our campaign is to show everyone what same-sex couples have to deal with, and to get people to help fight for their rights. We should try and fight for the rights of same-sex couples or before we know it, all of our rights will be taken away. We can't just sit around and let them do this without support, we have to fight together! | sharaby | 141q |
