Making a difference
by Stewart,TMS266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on April, 10th 2008 Have you ever wondered if working conditions were always great for children our age? Well they weren’t! There was a time in life when children had to work over 6 days a week losing fingers because machines were sped up. It was a time when children worked very hard, but because they were children they had to work for low wages. But, at the end of today when I look back on the pass I can say this was changed when Congress passed the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Justice for Children
by ChristopherR802ms266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on April, 10th 2008
Many children suffered injuries during their childhood because they had to work long hours and work for low wages. During the 1870’s was when children started to work. Many children were fighting for their rights and mostly all adults were at their side. So they went to strike and formed chains; as much as 23,000 workers went on strike during 1912. During the 1914 many children and parents were upset because only states could stop child labor, not Congress. This was also when the Children’s Rights Movement brought about an act called the Keating Owen Act. This act was brought up in 1916 to prevent child labor. The Great Depression was a time when many children and adults lost their jobs, and they didn’t have money to take care of themselves. So many children died of pneumonia and tuberculosis. Even though children had hard times, the movement was successful because they achieved their goals.

Child Labor Abuse
by JoshuaR802MS266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on April, 13th 2008 Did you know that power come in numbers? Well in 1903 many children were working in factories for about 60 hours a week with missing limbs and body parts. People like mother Jones helped to prevent this from happening any more by gathering 7,000 children and marching from Philadelphia to New York protesting about the work week. Other people such as Jacob Riis, President Woodrow Wilson, President Franklin Roosevelt, and Lewis Hine all wanted to end or at least protect these children in these dangerous jobs. From all of this protesting it changed the law in 1938 when Congress passed the Fair Standard Labor Act to protect children entitling them for an education until the age of 16.
Hopes Of The Future
by SashaF,802,MS266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on May, 2nd 2008 “Better to starve fighting than to starve working.”, these were the words of the children and the families of the children who worked during the 1870’s through 1938. When the children’s civil rights movement began and ended. The children worked vigorously everyday, they worked long hours for low wages and under hazardous working conditions for an average of about 60 hours a week. I couldn’t imagine doing that, could you? Today because of these children, their families, and the people that fought and devoted their efforts into giving children rights, respect, and education they deserve, we no longer have to work endless hours and put tremendous effort into supporting our families. Also because of the many strikes and protest efforts made by these children and the people that supported the cause, children can now go to school and are required to go to school until a certain age, there are also laws to protect children against child labor, and to work at dangerous jobs you have to be at a certain age.

Child Labor
by AfiyaS,802,MS266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on May, 2nd 2008 Back in the 1870's, factories were very harmful and dangerous places to work . Yet, they still seemed to hire young children from the ages of 8 to the age of 18 . Children were getting hurt and nothing was being done about this. With the help of many people that cared about children such as Jacob Riis, Mother Jones, and Lewis Hine, many things came to an end and children finally got the rights that they needed to protect themselves with regards to working. And because of these activists fighting against the injustices, today’s children do not have to suffer the way children suffered decades ago.
The Journey of Child Labor
by JatayaM,802,MS266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on May, 2nd 2008Would you be able to get up early in the morning to go to work to 60 hours a week every day for a low wage? Well children between the ages of 7 and 13 faced this crisis every morning. Child labor continued on throughout the 1870s Until 1938. I believe that children were forced To do hard core dangerous manufacturing work such as working the in the coalmines.
The struggle for Children's Rights
by NairobiG,802,MS266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on May, 2nd 2008 Can you image waking up before the sun rose to go to work in order to support your family? This is what children had to do. The child labor movement lasted from the 1870’s to 1938. The cause for this movement was to fight against child labor, unhealthy and dangerous working conditions, and for long work hours and low wages. Children worked 60 hours a week and received little pay. Most Americans wanted their children in school but instead they were working to make ends meet for their family. This movement became successful because of activists such as Jacob Riis, Mother Jones, President Roosevelt, President Hoover, and Lewis Hines. Thanks to them, children no longer have to work and instead go to school.

Struggle for children
by AtoN,802,MS266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on May, 2nd 2008Child labor is when children work for long hours for little pay. The working conditions are unsafe and unhealthy. The Industrial Revolution started in the 1870’s. Children had to work more than they went to school. If accidents occurred in the factories their parents would send them back because most of the time they relied on the child’s money. Children were treated unfairly and worked long hours. Children and adults decided to make a movement to help children get civil rights. In 1886 Jacob Riis exposed the horrible life of families in tenements, mines and factories. As a result, New York passed the Factory Act. The actions of many people made this movement successful.

With the help of Jacob Riis, who took pictures of the poor& horrible situations, the government was able to take part in this.

Can you imagine working 60 hours in one week, without any breaks being just a young child? Well this is what children went through during the 1870’s through 1938. These were the years that the children’s civil rights movement was being pursued. Children went through very dangerous working conditions and sometimes they would loose different parts of their body because of these conditions and the machines that they have to work with. Mother Jones, a participant and vital person in this movement helped children’s voices to be heard. The children’s rights movement was a success because of the people that helped and the long and hard times of the children in the past.
children's fight for rights
by Armani,M,803,MS266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on May, 2nd 2008Have you ever had to work in a factory at the age of 14 years old? However from the years of 1870’s thought 1938 witch I think does not give children the proper time they need to be a kid had to deal with this. Many factory owners try to find ways around the law by forcing children’s working papers. Children work in dangerous situations at their jobs such as cold mines under very unhealthy conditions. However Jacob Radii’s wants the government to see the terrible conditions in immigrant neighborhoods by taking pictures. To stop children from being seen working in these horrible conditions factory owners train children to hide when it is time for an inspection.

by Jason,P,803,MS266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on May, 2nd 2008 Have you ever worked at the age of 6? Go back in time to 1870 and ask one of those children, the answer would most probably say yes. The reason for that was America’s industrialization, which was when America started to build many factorys and used farms less. Because there were so many factories the factory owners needed many workers. They saw that if they hired children they would not have to pay them a lot and can make them work in any condition like sifting coal or working large machines. People who helped eliminate this were congress, Jacob Riis, Theodore Roosevelt, Mother Jones, and president Hoover. After many attempts to convince the supreme court to ban child labor in 1938 the supreme court finally passed the fair labor standards act. This act prevented children to work full time jobs unless farming.
Children Civil Rights
by Cynthia from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on May, 2nd 2008
Before the 1800’s, many children worked on their parents’ farms. As factories developed, working children mined for coal, worked in mills and sold newspaper on the street. Factory owners liked hiring children because it was cheaper than hiring adults. Not all children worked, but those who did were paid less than adults. These children had dangerous jobs. Many worked 60 hours over six days a week. When children were injured, factory owners simply replaced them. Child laborers fought for their rights. They wrote the President and shamed the government into passing laws protecting children. But these laws were hard to enforce. The civil movement lasted 1870s-1938. Hoover, Roosevelt, Mother Jones and Luis Hines were some of the participants.

We Have The Victory
by Caleb.B,803,MS.266 from Park Place MS 266 Child Labor, in , on May, 2nd 2008 There was also political injustice in America for children because in New York State there were only 2 inspectors to examine factories in all of New York. But even when inspectors did come children were trained to hide so inspectors wouldn’t see what such bad shape they were in. One primary source that you can look at is the injury of Camella Teoli. She was 12 years old working at a mill in Lawrence , Massachusetts and she got her hair and scalp pulled by a mill, and ended up going to the hospital for 7 months and her family was struggling without her wages. The owners of the mill didn’t care one bit about her and made things worse, they lowered workers wages a sped up the machines.
